My Attendance at Aileron … What an Awesome Experience!

By Gary K. Pino, FMP Professional Development is a huge continuous improvement opportunity and positive investment here at IDO Incorporated.  This win-win situation allows for professional advancement for our Associates and helps to continue to solidify the overall strength of our Firm.  In June 2015, I had the opportunity to attend Aileron’s two (2) day Senior Executive course, and walked away from it a refreshed, rejuvenated and a “Kool-Aid drinking” Senior Managing Associate of our firm. Before I share some brief details on  my “born again” experience, I wanted to provide you with a summary of what Aileron is, what it stands for and what it helps a firm ultimately accomplish.   ai·le·ron n. — One of two movable flaps on the wings of an airplane that can be used to control the plane’s rolling and banking movements. –American Heritage Dictionary “Dream No Little Dreams” One of Clay Mathile’s dreams was to own his own business- and when he and his wife Mary became the owners of Iams in 1982, Mr. Mathile realized he had no idea how to actually run a business. Being a lifelong learner, Mr. Mathile took a Course for President’s and joined a President’s group. It was then that he discovered Professional Management, a systematic approach to running and growing a business, which helped him take the Iams Company from $12.5 million to $1 billion when he sold it to Procter and Gamble in 1999. Out of gratitude to those who helped Mr. Mathile succeed and as a desire to “pay it forward”, Mr. Mathile founded Aileron to help other business owners learn how to live professional management. Aileron is a non-profit organization whose vision and mission is to: Raise the quality of life in America by unleashing the potential of private businesses through professional management. Aileron is a community of business owners who have learned, lived and studied professional management. Aileron’s Professional Management System, as well as many other learning tools, experiences and resources have been developed based on years of practical experience to help businesses employ the disciplines of professional management. What is the PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM? Aieron’s Professional Management System helps a company run their business so their business doesn’t run them. As a business grows and takes shape, it becomes more complex and vulnerable to external forces. Running a profitable business takes more than a good product or service. Every business needs a professional management system in order to gain control, grow and be sustainable. It helps a company navigate changing markets, reduce their risk(s) and manage their growth. Professional Management = Direction – Operation – Control (the “DOC” Model) DIRECTION: Leadership – A leader’s ongoing process of knowing and developing oneself to become a highly effective leader. Strategy – An organization’s ongoing process of prioritizing resources that are aligned to the future desired state so that a sustainable competitive advantage can be reached. OPERATION: People Development – An organization’s ongoing process of growing the individual and team talent needed for today and the future. Business Structure: An organization’s ongoing method of aligning and allocating the resources and processes needed to achieve the future desired state. CONTROL: Performance Management: An organization’s ongoing process of monitoring and improving performance. Culture – An organization’s ongoing process of fostering the environment, behaviors and activities that brings the organizational beliefs and values to life.   What really made my Aileron experience fly off the charts (no pun intended) could easily be attributed to my instructor, facilitator, teacher (and now, I am proud to say, a “good friend”), Marty Grunder.  Marty is the President and CEO of Grunder Landscaping, a Dayton, Ohio based creative landscaping design, installation and maintenance business.  As its founder in 1984, Marty turned a college paying job into an organization that has won numerous awards recognizing its high level of service and sustained growth.  Marty also founded Grunder! Inc., a business consulting company that provides speaking, training and consulting services to entrepreneurs and business leaders.  In 2003, his book, The Nine Super Simple Steps to Entrepreneurial Success, was named the Business Book of the year! In addition to what Aileron preaches, Marty shared with our class some very effective and sustainable food for thought information, his company’s Q-L-T-P credo … Quality We must do everything the best possible way. We are completely committed to high standards in all aspects of our business. To ensure quality we will:

To say my Aileron experience was breathtaking, a renewal of sorts and timely, would be an understatement.  I have come back to my company with a fresher and more enthusiastic approach to how I may help mentor our Associates; market our firm’s service offerings; and ultimately help our firm to yield profitable growth through new business development.   To our Firm Principal, Jill Mendoza, thank you for providing me the opportunity to obtain this awesome Aileron experience.
