Is Your Workplace Ready?

By: Lee Boyland We all know that our culture is seeing a shift in communication (think social media, e-mail, Skype) and a shift in how business is done (exporting, suppliers, subcontracting), but what does that mean in terms of numbers? As a person who loves statistics, I am happy to share some with you:

  • In a recent survey conducted by researchers of “Their Living Workplace Survey”, it was determined that 62% of firms say about a third of their employees spend 40% of their time working remotely
  • Decision makers say, “flexible and remote work options” help them to attract the best talent and keep them on staff
  • The top three factors determining job satisfaction are salary (identified by 55% of respondents), the quality of the work environment (37%), and flexibility to work outside the office or at home (33%)
  • The typical manufacturing company relies on 35 different manufacturers around the globe

In a day and age where we’re more communicative than ever through the many formats (face-to-face, telephone, fax, e-mail, social media, etc.), it’s becoming easier to communicate and work with peers across the globe. While no communication is perhaps as effective as face-to-face, what if it could still be face-to-face but across the globe? With technology such as Skype, you can be virtually working side-by-side with someone and have immediate access to him/her during the workday but actually in another country! Companies such as Steelcase that manufacture equipment to be used with furniture offer easy ways to use Skype and similar technologies. What else is changing in the work world? We know that offices and workplaces are getting smaller, but they’re also using space more efficiently. Instead of just large conference rooms, now many companies are adapting to offer more, smaller conference rooms that are more conducive to the small meetings people typically have and, thus, reduce real estate. What changes have you seen in your workplace? What technology would make you more efficient at your job? Information borrowed from live CEU presentation and Steelcase 360 Research
