The New Hood – Agrihood

The New Hood – Agrihood

By: Kris Kleinknight

That’s right – Agrihoods.  They are popping up across the US and will probably continue to do so for some time.  You may be asking, “what is an Agrihood”?  An agrihood is a residential neighborhood with a farm at the center—not a golf course, club house or pool, but something really sensible: fresh, organic food!

And now higher end developments are emerging.  “Agritopias” centered around farmland – the true essence of Farm to Table!  They are also known as Farm-centric communities.  Developers and residents are striving to change the paradigms of high-end living.  The new focus is on sustainability and developing around the food we consume.  Fresh food!  Here, residents gain understanding of where their food originates and even get to know the first names of the people providing it!

Take Willowsford Farm in  Ashburn, VA; their mission is to grow healthy, lively food right where people live, and to offer The Farm as a place to realize their connections to the natural world and to each other. It is an old model, but new to our time and place.

Check out Serenbe at where the founders believe that “if you want to change the world, you should start in your own backyard.”   If that’s so, then Serenbe is quite a beginning.  Linked into Serenbe is Nygren Placemaking – Strategies for Developing Sustainable Communities.  Nygren was created to assist developers, creators, and dreamers with fine tuning their ideas and turning them into a reality.
