By: Lindsay Ferro Summer vacations are in full swing this time of year. There are so many places to see in our country, let alone in the world that sometimes it can be overwhelming just to think about. I’ve almost lived in Indy for a year and I’m still exploring all the local places to go! Of course as a designer, the places that inspire me most tend to have beautiful architecture, interiors, and landscapes so I decided to create a list of my top inspirational places to visit. Now if only I could win the lottery and make my dreams become reality! What places would you add to the list? 1) Venice, Italy: I can just imagine the picturesque scene going down the Grand Canal in a gondola with the beautiful architecture and city life surrounding you. It is a city on water which is probably another reason why it makes my top list. I love anything near or on water. 2) Sydney, Australia: With the amazingly designed Sydney Opera House, the Harbor Bridge, the Rock, Sydney is full of sites to see. The historical cobblestone streets have art, music, and cultural inspiration at every corner. Don’t forget the awesome accents of the locals! 3) Dubai: Home to some of the most amazing skyscrapers in the world. This city is proof that design is limitless as long as you have the money. Sounds like a designers dream! The list of cool sites is endless but here are few: Burj Dubai, Al Burj, Burj al-Arab Hotel, and the World Islands. 4) The Vatican in Rome: Home to some of the World’s most famous paintings, sculptures, and buildings. St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican museums are just a few. 5) New York City: Has always been on my list to visit in the USA. With the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park, 9/11 Memorial there are so many iconic places to see that I grew up learning about. 6) Rio de Janeiro: The perfect combination of beautiful landscapes and cityscapes. The 2nd largest city in Brazil has beautiful historical & modern architecture, natural forests, mountains, beaches, and the famous Christ the Redeemer statue. 7) Barcelona, Spain: With a mix of traditional, gothic, and modern design this city is full of culture and history. The main buildings and sites to see include Park Guell, Casa Batllo, and La Sagrada. 8) London: The capital city of England and the most populous city in the United Kingdom has a lot to offer including the Tower of London, London Eye, and various museums and galleries. 9) Santorini, Greece: Really any of the islands in the Southern Aegean Sea have the most gorgeous landscape views. I love the way the architecture is built into the surrounding volcanic rock, and the famous historic sites in Athens are not too far away. 10) Paris, France: Bonjour! I think the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind is the beautiful Eiffel Tower. Of course the capital of France has much more to offer including the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, Sacre Coeur, Seine River, etc. Even our local IIDA chapter was inspired by this city for their upcoming summer event.
