By: Julie Knight The MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas, NV just completed in October 2012 a $160 million renovation and upgrade to their property. The Grand is the second largest hotel in the world. And as a part of their corporate business plan, they strive to continually look for ways to save energy, water and other resources. Some of the corporate implemented policies are that all hotel limousines will run on natural gas instead of gasoline. And all room will have digital displays for in room temperature controls and paraben and sulfate free guest amenities. But the most attractive new feature to me is that 10,000 new solar powered roll shades were installed with the renovation. Each guest room has the power of the sun to further control the room light, shade and temperature. These solar powered shades made by BTX are a motor system that can harness sun power with as little as only two hours of sunlight a day! The motor system has a small tubular motor that uses low voltage and is extremely quiet. And best of all, it utilizes a wireless wall panel switch so no electrician is needed. You simply attach the solar power convector to the inside or outside of your window, run this wire to the motorized shade, mount the shade and you’re done. And, you can use a wireless remote or even an iPad to operate every shade in your house! So no batteries, no electrician and each shade is self-generating its own power!
