With Great Fashion Comes Great Art

With Great Fashion Comes Great Art

By: Janet H. Thomas, RID Take one Architectural Master and two fashion giants and put them together. What do you get? A fascinating Art complex known as the Prada Foundation. Rem Koolhaas of OMA developed this 200,000 square foot art venue for Miuccia Prada and husband Patrizio Bertelli of Prada, who dominate the fashion world and collect contemporary art. While they have exhibited over the years in multiple Milan venues the Prada Foundation consolidates over 120,000 square feet of exhibit space into one multi building complex. The site consists of 7 buildings, blending old structures with new. Koolhaas uses simple architectural lines in the new buildings to contrast with the historical details of the old. Gallery spaces are clean lined, acting as a backdrop for the permanent exhibits. Finishes are intriguing, ranging from travertine, wood, aluminum foam, mirrored glass to gold leaf. Arguing that too much of current architecture is about making grand personal statements for which Koolhaas has been known for in the past, he chose understatement with elegant gestures to pull the two worlds into one. Other amenities include a café designed by movie director Wes Anderson, a 200 seat theater with a front wall that opens to the adjacent plaza, library space, rooftop terrace, and extensive outdoor spaces.
